Happy Discovery

I had to leave town for several days for a family matter, right in the midst of a nuno felted scarf. I had dyed two silk gauze scarves, one gold, one gray/green. My idea was to marry the two pieces together with the wool between them. I, more often than not, prefer the "un-wooled' side of a nuno scarf. I've no idea why, perhaps it is just the wonderful water color effect of the the colors blended together that appeals to me so much. So I thought, why not make a scarf that is completely "un-wooled" by having the wool between two scarves. I had first seen this done on a small scale by Connie Delameter ( I might not be spelling that right) several years ago. Connie is an amazing fiber artists and shepherdess and person. I laid out a very thin layer of merino wool, in multiple colors between the two scarves so that there would be a different effect on each side. I love the look of each side, and maybe the darker side the best. Since I had to leave in the midst of the felting, it was allowed to dry is this lovely crinkled state. Oh Wow, do I love the effect, it is nearly pleated, and has great "give" the fabric. The results are very pretty, very feminine. My big problem is that I'll need to find a place to allow it to dry for 2-3 days next time around.

Does anyone else love the back side of nuno? Would love to hear from you!
Are you going to try putting two scarves together? It could be fun!
Peace in your heart, joy in your felting!

For my purposes, I consider the silk fabric side the "right" side. The wool migration adds the texture and sometimes color change. I use a lot of patterned silk fabric (sari mainly anymore) and think the end product is gorgeous!

I usually consider the silk side to be the "right" side. The wool adds texture and color, but I'm really using it to enhance the silk fabric .. usually sari silk.

Made a scarf last winter using two pieces of sari silk with wool between. Luscious looking and wonderful to wear.

LOL, I've always considered the silk side the "wrong" side. To each her own!

Carm, Hi!
Likewise, the sari and other silks are the outside to me. I consider it my working in silk time with the wool fibers as an added texture to the silk....however, Vilte's work inspires me to look at it differently each time I see her creations. One thing for sure, there is no wrong side in art...just vision!
Thanks so much for you r comments!

Becky, it is such a personal choice, isn't it. I think most see it the way you do. I kind of feel like the odd one when it comes to this particular fiber effect...maybe that's because I am! (It's okay, I'm getting used to it1! lol)

I have always much preferred the silk side and have done as you did many times...the wool side is always the wrong side to me and it was fun to see your post as I have been wondering why noone else has this feeling...I love the muslin side better also than the wool side, although I do love wool..the scarf looks wonderful and dyeing and drying it is very beautiful..the wool side always looks so woolly to me lol

Beautiful color, texture - I am not at all familiar with felting but I do love what you are doing. I've worked in silk batik, ikat and freeform.

I condiser the silk side the right side, have you tried this with burn out fabric- looks wonderful. I often use burn out and laminate with fibre between two layers, I really like the finish.

Love the colours you get, what dyes do you use?

A good work! There's always an interest there, in my country there are also some works of art like this, but this works great!

cathcing up on your posts..I am in agreements about the "right" side being the ruched side..though I ahve enjoyed seeing and making some designs/patterns on the wool side that I really loved, too. haven't tried the wool between though have thought about it for a while myself!! Will report!
