Cotton Scrim/Cheeze Cloth Laminate Felt

Martha, Martha, Martha! She planted this seed of making a cheese cloth laminate/nuno felt in my head. I told her I wanted to do one and she challenged me to do one before Michigan Fiber Festival. Ok Martha, you win, here it is. What do you think?

It is ultra light, great drape-ability, perfect for walking one of Michigan's fine beaches in the evening. Now, to get to the beach!

Happy Felting, and Shalom,
Suzanne

This is so pretty! I really like the colors you used. Did you lay fiber on both sides?

Thanks Kelly.
Fibers were laid out ultra fine, one side only. I used merino/silk and then the other fibers that were added on the surface were hand dyed tencel.
Does that help?

I think it's beautiful and love all that texture . I have had poor results felting on any silk except very open weave silk gauze so this might actually work for me . Might be cheaper learning to dye on this then silk . Thanks for sharing .

Krex,
I've also found that if I use cold water on the initial parts of my felting, it just works better. When I am working on silks, I use cold water all the way through until the final rinse. It give the wool time to migrate through the silk and I use "butterfly touch" until the fiber have migrated well. Only after that has happened do I become more aggressive with it. Hope that will encourage you to try it again.
hugs,
Suzanne

I seriously love this!! It's so soft, and I just like the natural look of it. That green merino/silk is one of my favorites too. I will have to try this next :)

I have been wanting to try to nuno with cheesecloth, but have not seen anyone's results until now-WOW! I am so totally stoked to get my felting table out Saturday morning and to work up my first cheesecloth wrap. Thank you for sharing your results, and your suggestions on how to do this well. I'm hoping for a happy experiment!

Thanks for the suggestions Suzanne, I do use cold water but can get pretty aggressive and inpatient . I did buy several yards of this from Home Depot and am looking forward to experimenting<---my favorite part of felting .

is this really felted on cheese cloth? I wear shawls all the time in my office, and would love to use some of the rovings I have to do something new---rather than spin and knit or spin and crochet

Yes Andrea, really it is felted onto cheese cloth, very little fiber, very little shrinkage, wonderful drape. try it....or come see me at Wisc. Sheep and Wool in a couple of weeks!
Thanks for your comments!
