Catching Up / Falling Behind

It has been a couple of weeks of packing, unpacking, dyeing wool, getting ready for the next show, blown head gasket on my big van, (gerrrrrrrrrrrr!), packing orders, getting ready for classes, and finding precious little time to create. I also find the heat, which has been intense this year with very high humidity, disabling.

I've only made a few things in the past two weeks. One of the things I was able to get done was this nuno/laminate scarf. Huge shrinkage was achieved on this piece. It started out 7 feet x 3.5 feet, but after it was all done, it measures a mere 54" x 24". It has merino silk, hand dyed silk roving, mohair locks in scattered clumps all on silk gauze. What great fun to watch it all come together. My goal is to get one a day completed over this week.

On many of my felts I've been adding sari silks and a huge new shipment arrived last week. These are in fat quarters and the variety of colors is stunning and inspiring. I've been buying them from Fiona Wright on Etsy.

The service and selection is outstanding. If you decided to try out the silks, you'll be hard-pressed to be disappointing. These are recycled so they do have some small, and I do mean small, flaws. For those of us who use them in the feltmaking process, it is completely un-noticeable. The colors are incredible.

This hat has was made of hand dyed merino/silk with some of the sari silk on the surface, as well as my beloved cheese cloth. When working with the sari silks, be sure to be very gentle and use cold soapy water until it has really melded into the wool.

I had the unique opportunity to be on a local TV station, Channel 8, the program "eightwest" this morning. Here is the link to watch it if you'd like.

So tired tonight, maybe I'll not make any felt tonight.
Sleep well in Peace,

Congratulations on being on TV.

When you make a direct link, you put a href (surrounded by greater and lesser brackets) and then a href (a slash before the second). Then you put the link in the first a href.

(A bit complicated, but it's Hyperlink Reference).

Keep on doing what you do best!

Stunning pieces. Ab Fab.
Know what you mean about the heat. It's been very warm here in UK also.
I had a go at nuno the other week. The test piece worked out great, alas the full size project failed miserably ! hey ho. Too busy at the moment to re test.
Well done about being on TV. Celeb status eh ! congratulations x

No celeb status here Maggie, just have a wonderful step daughter who does her best to promote my feltmaking. She is a natural born marketing Queen! She got the little spot for me on local TV. I thought it was so nice of her. I just wish I didn't feel so awkward seeing myself the way others do. I'd never have a poker face!
Try again with the nuno. Slow and easy does it best!

Wow your work is lovely, and thank you so much for mentioning us.
You know we send these silks off everywhere, I used to felt a lot but have little time it is good to see them being used in yummy things- make me know I will get back to it one day soon!
best wishes
Fiona :)

I looked at a couple of your pics closeup and noticed the unfinished edges. You should either hem them or cover them with wool. It isn't very good workmanship to leave ragged edges. I don't see how you can justify doing it. It sets a bad example for people trying to learn.
Would you buy a dress without a hem? With fabric just cut and left like that?
It would be different if you were trying for that look, but obviously you are trying to make it "elegant" with ruffles so the raw edge just looks sloppy and lazy.

Anonymous,
Thanks for your input. I'll take it under consideration, however, I like the raw edges on somethings, but not on all. I think it comes down to personal tastes and choices and what the wool whispers at the time of the making of the item.
Thanks again,
Suzanne
